How to lose weight effectively

Weight loss and Hypnotherapy

It is that time of year when many of us begin to think that we must lose weight. We have all tried all those diets which are the latest wonder of the age and we may have even lost weight short term - only to see it creep back on again! How frustrating!! Weight loss clubs such as Weight watchers and similar slimming clubs have a group of people working together to lose weight and perhaps this shows why they are often successful – motivation. These groups are great and tried and tested – but sometimes they aren’t for everybody or maybe people feel that they may need more help in addition and I explain why they might think that below.

That is also my approach as a Hypnotherapist. Basically losing weight really isn’t rocket science - we simply need to eat the right things in moderation – small amounts of lean meat or fish and (preferably steamed) vegetables or salads - cut out the high fat and sugary things - cut back on alcohol and take more exercise. Burn more calories than you eat and the majority of the time you will lose weight. Eat like that most of the time with an occasional treat and you will be slim for good and you will live longer too!!

Simple! I hear you ask: “If so why aren’t we all slim?” Many people find that apparently simple change too hard - so this is where using Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming – as used by Paul McKenna – comes in to play.
I see people at my surgery at French Complexion regularly for weight issues in addition to the myriad other things like smoking or therapeutic issues. First it is a matter of assessing what the client eats – I encourage a food diary – and looking at where changes to diet can be beneficial. I always say to clients: “Don’t beat yourself up!” It should be a pleasure to lose weight and if it means having exotic treats in substitution for chocolate or crisps then spend the money on those – some expensive bit of fruit or good lean meat or fish. Better nutrition eaten in moderation and a greater commitment to those 5 pieces of fresh fruit and veg we know that we should all be eating needn’t be a chore – it can be a pleasure if what we buy is great quality and really tasty. I also find that steaming food really seems to bring out its flavour without leaving many of the nutrients behind in the cooking vessel.

I also look at underlying issues – it may surprise some readers but many weight issues are actually related to people’s problems in life. One especially heavy client of mine had “tried everything” – but the bullying of her over her weight, and her subsequent low self esteem, were really the problem. Once these issues were addressed using Hypnotherapy and a change in what she ate plus more exercise the weight fell off at 5 pounds or more each week. I applaud clients like that because if they confront their demons with a trained Hypnotherapist then they can lose weight for life because they have changed their relationship to food. Some people just need motivation and Hypnosis and NLP can help here as well – using these powerful tools I can help people “change the script” and choose to make a change for the better.
